Christian MacDonald

Christian MacDonald began his photographic career in California, before moving to New York where he learnt his craft assisting legendary photographer Steven Meisel. A through-line of his approach to image-making is his capacity to create elegantly pared down, subtle studio portraits that capture the character of the sitter, to on-location, cinematic narratives. Since his education in the Film Department of Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, his study of analog darkroom techniques - and his knowledge of the histories of photography - has underpinned his talent for orchestrating the visual world into his editorial and advertising work. MacDonald’s photographs convey an intense sense of place and the heightened moment of photographic engagement with his subject—always bridging the divide between fashion and portrait photography. He has created editorial photographs for magazines including Another Man, Dior Magazine, i-D, Interview, WSJ Magazine, British Vogue, Vogue Italia, Vogue Nippon, and Vogue Paris. His advertising clients include Barneys New York, Calvin Klein, Coach, DKNY, H&M, Hugo Boss, Moncler, Nike, Topshop, Versace and Zara.
